I love to paint. The only problem is, I'm not very good at it. Oh, this isn't a case of modesty - it's just a fact. I'm okay with that. (Me, okay with less than perfect? Wow, and it's only taken me...well, a lot of years!) But makers still gotta make. The secret is finding ways to make things that don't require a lot (read: any) talent but still come out looking awesome! Which leads me to watercolors, which are, by far, my medium of choice. (At least right now. Ask me again in a month!) Watercolors always look good to me, no matter how far the finished product is from my original idea. Perhaps my favorite thing about watercolors is that it's really easy to make something that looks really nice. When I got my hands on these mini canvases, there was no doubt what I was going to try them with! Supplies:
I started out by picking a silhouette to go on my canvas. If you know me, then it's no surprise that I ended up with a chihuahua shape. While I now share my home with a crazy Pomeranian mix, a part of my heart will always belong with a chihuahua named Lily. This one goes out to her. I used my Cricut Explore to cut out the image on pink scrapbook paper. Then, down to the painting. I stuck with one color - a sky blue - and just started brushing with basic strokes across the canvas. It ended up with a bit of an ombre-effect, with the bottom being darker and lightening as I reached the top. I'd love to say that was intentional but...no. When the paint dried, a used a glue stick to adhere my chihuahua image to the canvas (I used the bumpier side of the scrapbook paper as opposed to the smooth side for a bit of texture). I love how it came out! This baby is now hanging in my bedroom (where you could formerly find the actual chihuahua burrowed under the blankets. It's just fitting!) What about you - have any art secrets for the less talented among us? I'd love to hear them!
